The first novel of R. K. Narayan to gain international fame was Swami and Friends, the story of a
young lad named Swami and his escapades with his two close friends, Rajam and Mani. More
than anything else, it is a story of friendship and camaraderie. Set in late pre-independence
India, the story takes us through the world of charming, boyish innocence of Swami in
Malgudi. With remarkable characterisation and a wonderful sense of humour, Narayan’s
Swami and Friends is a delight for the old and the young.

Director’s note:
Three chapters down, I was already in the process of visualising how I would create a stage version of the book. I had already began sketching potential stage design possibilities – It has been a delightful journey for me to recreate the magic of Malgudi for the stage. Transforming R.K.Narayan’s words to stage visuals has been the most challenging aspect for me as a director. I have attempted to couple stage craft and movement to bring to life the characters of Malgudi in its many landscapes. My special thanks to Manasi Subramaniam for adapting the book into a stage script. I am thankful to everyone who has supported me in making this performance possible.

Jagriti is a Performance Arts space dedicated to Theatre, Music, Dance and Comedy. Founded in 2011 by Arundhati and Jagdish Raja, the space has hosted several productions from India and around the world. A 200-seat theatre, built around a full-thrust stage, it is fully equipped to cater to both artistes and audience. The main stage is designed for intimate performances with adjoining spaces for informal lectures and gatherings. Jagriti is owned and operated by the not-for-profit ART Foundation, a registered charitable trust.

The Rooftop - above the main auditorium is an open-to-sky space with a staging area that can accommodate about 50 people. A raised and walled off platform can work as a perfect area for puppet theatre. The Rooftop has a restroom and a pantry.

The Terrace - alongside the auditorium, the Terrace can accommodate about 20 people as an informal gathering area.

Lumbini - extending out from the foyer, Lumbini has a stage and an open-to-sky terraced space for about 80 people.
