Uttara Kanda the last book of the epic Valmiki Ramayana deals with the return of Rama to Ayodhya and his coronation to the throne. After the war, a victorious Rama, Sita and Lakshmana return to the kingdom of Ayodhya. While the folks were ecstatic about Rama’s return, they questioned Sita’s chastity. They gossip that since she had stayed a long time in another man’s home, she was not to be accepted by Rama as his wife. Rama knew and believed Sita to be truthful.
